EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) is "a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences." (EMDR Institute, INC) Developed in the 1980's by Francine Shapiro, EMDR is a structured therapy that works by accessing and harnessing the body's natural, adaptive memory processing abilities to help transform painful memories and emotions and make them more manageable for individuals.
My EMDR journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, at which time I met and befriended a practitioner and trainer that was hosting a nightly meditation group via Zoom. As I listened to him discuss the benefits of EMDR, something clicked and resonated with me as I had had experience working with clients whose trauma had not responded to traditional talk therapy. I began my training and have, since then, become an EMDRIA-Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant-in-Training (EMDR International Association). Ongoing participation in the worldwide EMDR community helps me continue to learn new and innovative uses for the therapy as well as helping me to connect and share information with individuals that are as passionate as I am about continued growth in this area.
